Israel will hold its first national election since the war with Gaza began in October 2023. The Knesset approved a bill on Monday that sets November 1, 2026, as the date for the vote. This makes the election the first to occur since the October 7 attacks.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the date shortly after the bill passed. He stated that the vote would allow Israelis to decide the country's direction during a period of ongoing conflict. The announcement comes as the government continues to manage military operations in Gaza and security concerns along the northern border.

The decision to hold elections during wartime is a departure from previous conventions. In 1948, Israel postponed elections due to the war of independence, but this is the first time a general election is scheduled while active hostilities continue. Opposition leaders have argued that the timing places a burden on voters who are serving in the military or living near the front lines.

Benjamin Netanyahu, who has served as prime minister since 2022, is the favorite to win a third consecutive term. His Likud party currently holds the largest bloc in the Knesset. However, polls published in recent weeks show a tight race, with the center-left Blue and White coalition and the right-wing Religious Zionist party closing the gap. The outcome will determine whether Netanyahu can form a stable coalition or face a fragmented opposition.

Political analysts note that the election will also serve as a referendum on Netanyahu's legacy. Critics have pointed to the government's handling of the October 7 attacks and the subsequent military response as key factors in voter sentiment. Supporters argue that his leadership has preserved the country's security and restored relations with neighboring states.

The campaign is expected to focus on economic issues, particularly the cost of living and inflation, which have risen sharply in the last year. Housing affordability and healthcare access are also top concerns for voters. The government has pledged to reduce taxes and increase public investment in infrastructure if it retains power.

Voting is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Early voting for soldiers and those abroad will begin on October 28. The Knesset will be dissolved immediately after the bill is signed into law, and new committees will be formed to oversee the electoral process. Results are expected within 24 hours of the polls closing.

The next step is for the Central Elections Bureau to finalize the list of candidates and prepare the ballots. The bureau has confirmed that all necessary resources are in place to conduct the vote securely. The government will announce the official start of the campaign period on October 20, giving parties 12 days to promote their platforms before the election.
