President Donald Trump acknowledged the recent stroke suffered by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy on Sunday, describing the medical event as an unexpected occurrence for a man of Murphy's age. The President made these remarks while campaigning for Republican congressional candidates at an airport in Iowa.
A reporter from Fox News asked the President for his reaction to the news. Trump initially asked how severe the stroke was. After the reporter indicated he did not have specific details, Trump said he would offer a more detailed response at a later time.
"Certainly we don’t like to hear a thing like that," Trump stated. "I just heard about it inside. He's a pretty young guy. A little surprised to hear it. No, nobody wants to have that."
Murphy, 53, experienced numbness while attending his son's hockey game on Saturday. He traveled to a hospital where doctors confirmed the stroke. The Associated Press reported that Murphy was subsequently moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital for additional monitoring. Reports indicate he is responding to treatment.
Murphy serves as a prominent Democratic critic of the President. He recently labeled a potential military strategy related to a conflict in Iran as "insane." The Connecticut Democrat has held office since 2006 and serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Prior to his current Senate role, Murphy served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Connecticut state legislature. In 2022, he helped negotiate a bipartisan gun safety bill that President Joe Biden signed into law. Murphy has also authored a book examining American firearms culture and is viewed as a potential future presidential candidate.
