Former Langley mayor backs Tavier Wasser for sheriff
Scott Chaplin cites a rigorous hiring process and personal experience working with Wasser to counter recent criticisms of the candidate.

Scott Chaplin, who served as mayor of Langley from 2021 to 2023, wrote to the Whidbey News-Times on Sunday to endorse Tavier Wasser for sheriff. Chaplin stated that he knows Wasser well and trusts his abilities, a stance he said is a response to recent misinformation and conjecture surrounding the race.
Chaplin described the hiring process for the police chief position in Langley as extensive. The search included a nationwide review of applicants, a background investigation covering Wasser's teenage years, drug and psychological testing, and multiple interviews. Chaplin said he and Wasser spent hours discussing policing, personnel management, and budget constraints during that period.
The former mayor addressed a specific point of contention regarding the term "constitutional sheriff." Chaplin noted that neither Wasser nor his opponent, Felici, fit that definition, although Wasser used the phrase incorrectly during an early campaign speech. Chaplin said Wasser later admitted the error.
Chaplin characterized Wasser as a hard worker who advocates for officers and city staff. He said Wasser was never afraid to disagree with him or admit mistakes. The former mayor also highlighted Wasser's ability to de-escalate tense situations in public and his professional demeanor.
Chaplin pointed to Wasser's background in county deputy service and high-level Marine managerial responsibilities as evidence of his qualifications. He argued that these experiences, combined with his work in Langley, make Wasser a strong choice for the entire community regardless of political affiliation.
