More than 162,000 people died from stroke in the United States in 2023, according to the American Heart Association. The condition ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in the country. Medical professionals emphasize that rapid recognition of symptoms can prevent permanent brain damage.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, suffered a stroke on Saturday. His office stated that his prognosis is excellent. Murphy, 53, experienced numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game. His staff noted that he sought medical attention quickly.

The American Stroke Association promotes a six-point acronym called BE FAST to help the public identify potential strokes. The first letter stands for balance loss. Sudden dizziness, trouble walking, or a loss of coordination may indicate a medical emergency.

The second letter represents eye changes. Symptoms include blurred vision, double vision, or the loss of sight in one eye. The third letter covers face drooping. If a person's smile appears uneven or one side of the face feels numb, it is a warning sign.

The fourth letter stands for arm weakness. Numbness or weakness in one arm requires immediate attention. Patients are advised to raise both arms to see if one drifts downward. The fifth letter indicates speech difficulty. Slurred speech or trouble repeating a simple sentence are common symptoms.

The final letter is time. Individuals experiencing these signs should call 911 immediately. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. This happens when an artery is blocked or a blood vessel bursts. Brain tissue deprived of oxygen can suffer permanent damage, leading to long-term disability or death.

Other symptoms include severe headache, confusion, and numbness on one side of the body. The American Stroke Association advises that speed is critical for survival and full recovery.
