The war in Ukraine has continued for more than four and a half years, resulting in a localized ceasefire that took effect early Tuesday. The pause in fighting was negotiated by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to facilitate a humanitarian mission into the town of Oleshky.

The truce began at 3 a.m. local time to create a window for aid delivery. Russian and Ukrainian negotiators confirmed the start of the ceasefire in separate statements. The agreement allows an aid mission to enter the Russian-occupied town later this week. The mission is scheduled to deliver doctors, medicines, food supplies, and water before evacuation corridors open.

According to the United Nations, up to 2,000 people remain stranded in Oleshky. They face dwindling food and medicine supplies. Explosive mines and drone attacks in the area prevent the residents from leaving the town on their own.

Melania Trump led talks with civilian negotiators from both sides after meeting with U.N. officials who briefed her on the situation. Her office stated that these negotiations were part of a larger effort to support upcoming U.S.-brokered talks. Those talks are expected next month and aim to end the war.

The local ceasefire is scheduled to last through Saturday, with the possibility of extension. Deep mistrust between the two nations has previously thwarted similar attempts to pause fighting. However, the immediate threat to Kyiv continued even as the southern front quieted.

Minutes after 3 a.m., multiple ballistic missile explosions shook Kyiv. Air alerts sounded across multiple parts of the country. City officials reported that Russian ballistic missiles damaged the grounds of a university in the capital late Monday. One person was killed and 10 were injured in that specific attack. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, authorities said attacks late Monday killed two people and injured four.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the strikes in an online post. He wrote, "It is important that the world sees that Russia is showing nothing but a desire to kill and continue waging war." Oleshky is located in the Kherson region, approximately 550 kilometers southeast of Kyiv. The town was captured by Russian forces on the first day of the full-scale invasion in 2022 and was flooded by a dam collapse in June 2023.
