Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, for a working visit that includes meetings with Ukraine's top officials and a joint appearance at an economic forum. The Moldovan government announced the trip, which covers bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and regional security. Tofan is accompanied by three cabinet members: Vladimir Bolea, minister of infrastructure and regional development; Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi; and Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu.
The visit's schedule includes meetings with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. Discussions between the two prime ministers will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and developing trade. They will also address regional security and the European Union aspirations of both nations. Tofan and Koretskyi are set to participate together in the Kyiv International Economic Forum.
Energy supply is a central topic for the Moldovan delegation. On October 12, Tofan stated that Moldova was considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to meet its needs, a subject he said he planned to raise during this visit. This followed an October 14 meeting between Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and Tofan, where the two discussed shared energy challenges and preparations for winter.
Beyond energy and trade talks, Moldovan President Maia Sandu has addressed her country's capacity to accept refugees. Sandu said Moldova is prepared to handle another wave of displaced people from Ukraine should departures begin due to the severe humanitarian situation there.
