Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officers are searching for a bear that attacked a woman on Sunday morning near Index. The incident occurred in the 49400 block of Index-Galena Road, close to U.S. 2.
Sultan police reported that a resident found a mother bear and her cub in the area. Department officials stated they received a call about 7:50 a.m. regarding the attack on an adult woman.
According to state officials, the bear knocked the woman down from behind. It then bit and clawed her while she was on the ground. The woman walked to her home, where she contacted emergency services.
Officers described her injuries as serious but not life-threatening. She was transported to a hospital for treatment.
State officers and Snohomish County deputies used dogs to track the animal on Sunday. That effort did not locate the bear. A trap is now set nearby, and wildlife police plan to increase patrols in the area. A spokesperson confirmed on Monday that the search is ongoing.
The attack site is near the Skykomish River fork and trailheads for Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls. Sultan police urged local residents to exercise caution. The department advised hikers to stand up, wave their hands, and speak in a low voice if a bear approaches. They should back away without direct eye contact and avoid running.
Officials recommend making noise and leashing pets while hiking. They also suggest carrying bear spray that is easy to reach. Residents can report bear sightings to Sultan police at 425-407-3999 or the Department of Fish and Wildlife at 360-902-2936.
