Arlington Haunted House Closes After Permit Denial Near Completion
The Murray family’s decade-long tradition ended abruptly when new building and fire codes required upgrades the volunteer group could not afford.

The Arlington Community Haunted House closed its doors this October after local code enforcement denied its operating permit. The decision ended a ten-year tradition of serving visitors in the Murray family yard in Arlington, Washington. Jackie Murray and her father, Brian Murray, had hosted the attraction since 2015, building a reputation for family-friendly scares with the help of a large volunteer base.
The closure came after the group finished approximately 85% of this year’s construction. The planned theme featured a circus troupe of radioactive clowns resulting from a nuclear reactor meltdown. Jackie Murray stated that the group received an email notice denying the permit just days before the scheduled October 1 opening. The family had expected to welcome guests to the maze as usual.
Upon meeting with officials in person, the Murray family learned that regulatory requirements had shifted. Jackie Murray explained that amusement structures must now adhere to specific building codes. The new regulations mandated updates to the physical setup that the volunteer-run operation could not fund. The financial gap forced the family to stop the event before it began.
The news required Jackie Murray to inform the volunteer team of the cancellation. She described the process as emotionally difficult, noting that she drove away from the site to cry after the initial shock. The group had paused operations in 2022 during the pandemic but had since expanded its scope and attendance. The sudden stop disrupted a growing local neighborhood event.
To preserve the physical elements of the attraction, Jackie Murray contacted a nearby organization called Terror for a Cause: Stanwood's Haunted Experience. The Stanwood group accepted the majority of the Arlington props. These items are now part of their display at the local fairgrounds. The Stanwood attraction operates on Fridays and Saturdays.
Brian Murray reflected on the decade of operation, noting that the event connected the family with many new community members. He said the group holds fond memories of the interactions and the work involved in building the maze. The Arlington Community Haunted House will not return this season, leaving the yard empty for the Halloween period.
