The United States is marking 250 years since its founding in 1776, a milestone that shapes the theme of this year’s Veterans Day observance at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla.

The event, titled “Guardians of the Promise: The 250-Year Unbroken Line,” will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South. Neil O’Connell, executive director of the memorial, noted in a statement that the site’s walls display individual stories on more than 7,000 plaques. He described these plaques as representing nearly 10,000 veterans and forming a 250-year history of service.

The program begins with a modern military service and remarks from guest speakers. The celebration will then open to veterans, active-duty service members, families, and supporters. Marine Band San Diego will provide a patriotic musical performance, while vocalist Lily Brodie will also perform. The San Diego Salute Aerial Formation Team will conduct an aerial flyover during the event. The ceremony includes the official dedication of two permanent plaques commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Donnie Edwards, a former National Football League linebacker and philanthropist, will deliver the keynote address. Edwards, 53, attended Chula Vista High School and played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers in the NFL.

Since retiring from professional football, Edwards has focused on charitable work. He founded the Army Historical Foundation to preserve U.S. Army history and the Best Defense Foundation to support military members and their families. A press release from Mount Soledad indicated that his speech will cover veteran stewardship, living legacy, and civic responsibility. Edwards could not be reached for comment prior to the event.

The memorial serves as a key location for this annual commemoration. The event structure combines formal military honors with community celebration to mark the specific historical anniversary. The dedication of new plaques adds a permanent physical marker for the 250th year of the republic.
