U.S. 2 came to a standstill on Tuesday morning after a multi-vehicle crash blocked traffic in both directions west of Monroe, Washington. The Washington State Department of Transportation confirmed the closure shortly after the incident began, leaving commuters stranded on a major route through King County.
Westbound lanes are shut down at Fryelands Boulevard, located at milepost 13. Eastbound traffic is halted at Roosevelt Road, marked as milepost 10.5. This dual closure has effectively severed the primary east-west corridor for drivers in the area, forcing them to seek alternate paths through local streets.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding stated that at least three vehicles were involved in the collision, with the possibility that a fourth car was part of the accident. One vehicle rolled over during the crash, necessitating a complex extrication for the driver inside. Two other individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
As of 6:15 a.m., the department has not issued an estimated time for reopening the highway. Crews are currently evaluating the scene to determine the extent of the damage and the cause of the collision. The patrol has indicated that details regarding what led to the crash remain limited at this time.
Drivers are urged to use alternate routes until further notice. The Washington State Patrol is expected to release more information as their investigation progresses. No official statement has yet been made regarding the final count of injuries or the specific conditions that contributed to the multi-car impact.
