Woman training for marathon stabbed in Brooklyn neck

Katie Suarez was stabbed in the neck while running in Brooklyn on Friday night. The 28-year-old woman was out training for the New York City Marathon when the attack occurred, according to police sources. She is currently in critical condition.

The incident took place shortly after 8 p.m. near the intersection of Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. Suarez was jogging along the path when she was struck. Her father found her after she failed to return home at the expected time. Investigators are asking for anyone who saw her between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway, between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, to come forward.

Neighbors have gathered outside Suarez’s home, placing flowers and candles on the sidewalk. One resident described the scene as terrible, noting how close the attack was to their own homes. Another resident said they would now be more cautious about their surroundings and the timing of their runs in the area.

New York State Senator Steve Chan is pushing for improvements to the location’s infrastructure. He noted that new wires were installed when a footbridge from 17th Avenue was rebuilt. Chan stated that while a couple of lights are coming to the area, the path needs more illumination to ensure safety for those using it.

The New York Police Department has not released a suspect list or a stated motive. They are deploying K-9 units, scuba teams, drones, and a Crime Stoppers truck to search the area. The NYPD is asking the public to contact them with any information that could help investigators reconstruct the events of Friday night.
