Scott Rosenzweig secured the Montana House District 57 seat with 3,802 votes, edging out challenger Marty Malone by just 17 votes. The final margin emerged after a recount narrowed the lead Rosenzweig held in the original count. Malone finished with 3,785 votes, making the difference between the two candidates smaller than the number of people who might stand in a single line at a polling place.

The recount process in legislative races is uncommon in Montana. The House District 57 contest was the only one to undergo a recount in that election cycle. Historically, it marked only the eighth time a legislative race in the state required a recount since the year 2000. This rarity highlights how infrequently the initial machine count is challenged or found wanting in lower-level contests.

Statewide turnout in the November 5, 2024, general election stood at 76.57 percent. Official records indicate that 612,423 of the state's 799,849 registered voters cast ballots. That figure means nearly one in four eligible residents did not vote. The gap between those who participated and those who did not was larger than the 17-vote margin that decided the House District 57 race.

Parents in the state are increasingly treating the voting process as a family activity to demystify civic participation. One local family described their routine of taking their young son to the polls and researching candidates together before the election. They discuss issues and explain their reasoning, aiming to show their child that voting requires thought and effort but grants a voice in representation.

This family emphasizes that they do not expect their son to agree with every choice they make. Instead, they want him to witness the deliberation and understand that his future ballot will be his own. They believe that listening in on these conversations helps make voting feel familiar before they are old enough to cast a ballot independently.

The close result in House District 57 serves as a concrete example for families discussing the weight of a single vote. While it is impossible to predict which races will be tight, the narrow outcome in that district illustrates that individual participation can alter the final tally. The family in question plans to continue reviewing ballots together before the next general election to maintain this open dialogue.

The 17-vote difference in House District 57 stands as the decisive factor in that specific contest. With 3,802 votes for Rosenzweig and 3,785 for Malone, the race was decided by a margin smaller than the number of voters in several small neighborhoods. The statewide data confirms that while many votes were cast, a small subset of them determined the winner in that legislative seat.
