OpenAI is pushing to secure up to $30 billion in new private funding, a move that would place its pre-money valuation at a staggering $1.25 trillion. If completed, a valuation above $1 trillion would establish the artificial intelligence company as the most highly valued private firm ever.

The round is being spearheaded by Coatue alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Negotiations regarding the specific terms remain ongoing, meaning the final structure of the deal could still shift before it closes.

There is a specific strategic angle tied to the Gulf funding. Reports indicate the capital from the UAE could be connected to a separate agreement designed to expand the company's access to computing capacity within the region. A spokesperson for the firm declined to comment on the fundraising details.

This initiative to raise capital from private sources marks a pivot away from an immediate public market debut. The company had previously submitted confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June, a filing that followed a March fundraising round that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion post-money.

The current effort to secure private funding at $1.25 trillion aligns with recent market chatter. Speculation regarding a massive capital injection at a $1.4 trillion valuation had circulated about a month prior, though the current terms being discussed specify the $1.25 trillion figure.

The valuation being sought for this private round is significant because it would reset expectations for the eventual IPO. By establishing a high baseline for the company's worth in private markets, the firm sets a demanding benchmark for its performance and pricing once it eventually trades publicly.

The pursuit of massive private capital is not unique to this firm in the current climate. Rival Anthropic is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its own public debut, a process many observers believe is nearing its conclusion.

Anthropic completed a $65 billion raise in May at a $965 billion valuation, an event many viewed at the time as its final major funding round prior to going public. Like its competitor, it filed confidential IPO paperwork in June.

Negotiations for the current round are continuing, and OpenAI is not the only major AI company preparing for a potential transition to public markets.
