The U.S. Attorney's Office indicted 42 individuals on Friday for their alleged roles in a San Diego County drug distribution network.

Federal officials linked the suspects to Varrio Hidden Hills, a street gang based in the Poway neighborhood. The group faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl across the region. Law enforcement officers said sales occurred in communities ranging from Oceanside and Escondido to El Cajon and Chula Vista.

Mark Remily, the FBI Special Agent in Charge for the San Diego office, described the organization as discreet. He told NBC 7 that the criminal network operated with no bounds and would create a ripple effect across the area. Remily noted that some criminals act brazenly while others remain discrete, placing this group in the latter category.

The announcement followed a two-year investigation into the gang, which federal prosecutors said had ties to the Mexican Mafia. John Marquez, a high-ranking member of the group, was among those charged. He is accused of running cross-border distribution operations that moved drugs from Mexican suppliers to local distributors. Marquez allegedly transported the resulting profits back to his suppliers in Mexico.

Agents served warrants at a Lemon Grove house early Wednesday morning as part of the county-wide probe. One suspect fired on the officers during the raid, though no one was injured. San Diego U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon confirmed that the investigation into that specific shooting remains ongoing.

Thirty-four of the indicted individuals are currently in federal custody. Agents are actively tracking the remaining eight suspects and expect to have all 42 in custody within the next few days.
