Curry Barker has already contacted Nathan Fielder about a potential collaboration following the release of 'You Can See Everything.' The director of 'Obsession' made the move after watching the three hour film, which he described as a rare cinematic experience that felt fresh and different from standard releases.
Barker spoke to reporters on Thursday night at the Time100 Next Gala held at Pier59 Studios. He admitted he knew little about Elizabeth Holmes' story before viewing the movie. He stated that he felt he missed certain tiny details but wished the runtime had been longer. He noted that such a duration is uncommon in modern cinema.
"I told him that. I said, 'Hey!' … I just put it out in the water," Barker said regarding his outreach to Fielder. He added that he is a huge fan of what Fielder is doing and noted that the film blurs the line between narrative and documentary storytelling in a way that feels new.
Both 'Obsession' and 'You Can See Everything' are currently earning recognition on the awards circuit. These films are driving industry conversations about what resonates with Gen Z audiences and what motivates them to attend theaters. Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis noted that the new work has turned the movie landscape topsy-turvy.
Barker attended the Academy Gala earlier in the week, where he was blown away by the presence of social media figures in the room. He specifically recalled seeing Emma Watson and freezing because she was a major part of his childhood. He admitted he was trying to play it cool but failed, making him feel weird in her presence.
Barker was honored at the Time100 Next event alongside Raye, Druski, and Paapa Essiedu. The night began with an intimate performance by Raye, who played jazzy versions of 'Cry Me a River' and 'Happier Times Ahead.' Himesh Patel and Alex Warren gave toasts, but Ashley Padilla from 'Saturday Night Live' received the largest crowd reaction. She joked that she was not going to hang all her hope for the future on her niece and nephew.
Seth Rogen wrote a profile for Barker ahead of the gala and stated he has already seen Barker's next film, 'Anything But Ghosts.' Rogen described the sophomore feature as even better than 'Obsession' and added that Barker is as good an actor as he is a director. The film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027.
