Habitat for Humanity of Island County will use a $25,000 grant from Peoples Bank to purchase a new construction truck. The vehicle is intended to support the organization's home repair and construction programs across Whidbey and Camano Islands. Orin Kolaitis, the organization's chief executive officer, stated that the funding is an investment in their ability to serve local families.

The truck will be used daily by Habitat's repair specialist to transport tools, equipment, and building materials to project sites. Kolaitis said the vehicle will allow the team to reach homeowners more efficiently. It will also restore operations at the Habitat Store, which Kolaitis described as essential to the organization's work.

Peoples Bank created its annual Impact Grant program in 2017 to fund specific projects that have a long-lasting effect on local communities. Lisa Hefter, the bank's chief operating officer, noted that the grant supports a practical solution for Island County residents. She said the bank is proud to back an organization with a proven record of helping people maintain safe, affordable housing.

Kolaitis explained that the grant extends beyond the purchase of a single vehicle. He said it helps preserve affordable housing and supports future homeowners. The goal, according to Kolaitis, is to keep more neighbors safely and affordably housed.

Peoples Bank is a locally owned community bank headquartered in Bellingham. The bank reports $2.4 billion in assets and operates 23 locations throughout Washington state. It has served the community for 100 years and received a five-star rating from BauerFinancial.

In addition to the Impact Grant, the bank is offering a separate $10,000 Peoples Choice Grant. Nine other applicants are currently under consideration for that award. Community members can vote for the winner online at the bank's website. Voting ends at midnight on October 23.

The $25,000 grant will go directly toward the purchase of the new truck. The vehicle is expected to be a reliable addition to Habitat's fleet, improving its capacity to conduct affordable home repairs and construction projects throughout the islands.
