Anthropic Investors Watch Portfolios Soar Ahead of Massive Listing
The AI company's upcoming public debut could turn early and late backers into major financial winners.

As artificial intelligence firms race toward public markets, investors are watching closely for the potential financial gains. Anthropic, a leading AI laboratory, is expected to go public this year, with a valuation that could reach up to $2 trillion. This anticipated listing will generate significant returns for those who backed the company in its earlier stages. However, the financial upside for many investors is already apparent, as the firm's current private market valuation sits at $965 billion.
According to Bloomberg, the holdings of various venture capital firms and individual backers are already worth billions at this current private valuation. The firm's growth trajectory shows how early involvement can lead to substantial wealth. Even those who invested when the company's valuation was much lower now see their positions reflected in the hundreds of billions of dollars in current market value. The following details outline the current worth of some of Anthropic's backers based on the latest private round's price.
One of the earliest individual contributors, Eric Schmidt, who formerly served as Google's CEO, invested in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021. At that time, PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. Today, Schmidt owns approximately 1% of the company. His stake is now valued at nearly $10 billion based on the current private valuation. Other firms, such as Iconiq, entered the scene later, writing a $6 billion check last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage investment has grown to $17 billion and holds the potential to double once the public offering occurs.
Several other investment firms have also seen their positions grow into multi-billion dollar holdings. Menlo Ventures, which led the company's Series D, has invested more than $1 billion over time. That stake is now valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Sound Ventures, an outfit launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, contributed $35 million during the 2023 Series C round. The firm has since added an additional $400 million to its position, which is now worth billions. It is noted that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm.
Some firms entered the market at much higher valuations but still managed to secure significant profits. Sequoia Capital, a well-known venture capital firm, made its first investment in the AI lab earlier this year. The company was valued at $380 billion at that time. Sequoia provided $3 billion for about 1% ownership, a position that has already more than doubled in value. Spark Capital, which holds a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C round when the valuation was $5 billion. That specific position has grown more than ninetyfold to reach $7 billion.
The potential for these figures to rise further is tied to the upcoming public listing. While current valuations already place these stakes in the billions, the expected $2 trillion valuation upon going public could significantly increase those amounts. Investors who entered during earlier funding rounds, when the company's value was measured in millions or low billions, stand to see the most dramatic growth. The transition from a private to a public entity marks a major milestone for the firm and its financial backers.
