Polk City Man Dies After Bar Altercation in Winter Haven; Police Seek Suspect on Manslaughter Warrant

A 40-year-old Polk City man has died from injuries he suffered in a fight at a Winter Haven bar, and police are now searching for the man they say is responsible.

The Winter Haven Police Department said Adam Chism died Wednesday, days after the confrontation at Caribbean Bay. Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for 40-year-old Brian Motley in connection with the case.

According to police, the incident took place at 1:47 a.m. on Sunday. Authorities said Motley and Chism were involved in a verbal dispute when Motley punched Chism one time. Chism lost consciousness and fell to the ground, officials said.

Chism was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said he never regained consciousness and died of his injuries on Wednesday.

Investigators also said Motley battered a second adult while running from the bar. That person was not injured, according to police.

Once Motley is located, he faces charges of manslaughter and felony battery, the department said. Authorities have not said what set off the initial verbal argument between the two men.

Police Chief Vance Monroe expressed sympathy for the victim's loved ones and asked for public assistance. "Our prayers and sympathies are with Adam's family and friends as they try to navigate through this senseless tragedy," Monroe said. "We ask for the public's help in locating Brian Motley and quickly bringing him to justice."
