GKIDS will release Godzilla Minus Zero in IMAX theaters on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with a wider theatrical rollout scheduled for Friday, November 6.
The film follows the 2023 release of Godzilla Minus One, which won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. That previous entry reset the franchise by returning the monster to its origins in postwar Japan. The new sequel picks up two years after the first film, setting the narrative in 1949.
Director Takashi Yamazaki, who also wrote the script and oversaw visual effects, continues his focus on the trauma of postwar Japan. The story centers on Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot, his wife Noriko, and their young daughter Akiko. The family lives in an atmosphere of grief and loss, a theme Yamazaki has emphasized since the franchise's inception in 1954 as an allegory for the atomic bomb.
The plot introduces Ghidorah, a dragon-like monster that spews lightning and destroys the city of Matsumoto. Professor Kanji Murakami, who lost his family in the Hiroshima bombing, experiences this destruction as a relapse of old trauma. The U.S. Army is present in this film, unlike the predecessor, and is depicted as a self-serving force that avoids involvement in Japan's crisis.
The responsibility to stop Ghidorah falls to a group led by naval engineer Kenji Noda. His team includes meteorologist Makoto Aoyama, who predicts kaiju movements using weather patterns. Kōichi and Noriko join the effort, a decision that requires them to leave their daughter behind for an extended period.
The film runs for 135 minutes and is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for violent content and bloody images. It is presented in Japanese with English subtitles. The movie features two major monster set pieces, including an aerial sequence involving a seaplane and Godzilla. The final confrontation between Godzilla and Ghidorah serves as the climactic battle.
Critics have noted that the human drama in the film often overshadows the kaiju spectacle, leading to a pacing that some find sluggish. The monster appears less frequently than in the first installment, with the narrative focusing heavily on the characters' emotional reconciliation with ecological disaster. The film is positioned as a second chapter in Yamazaki's vision, building anticipation for a potential third entry in the series.
