The Los Angeles County district attorney's office rejected a case against four people arrested for the Newhall fire.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Department detained the four individuals over the weekend. They faced suspicion of arson and conspiracy linked to the blaze on Aug. 24.

On Monday, the prosecutor's office sent the case back to law enforcement. A spokesperson explained the matter was not ready for a final decision. The office requested that investigators gather more evidence and answer lingering questions.

The fire started inside an auto-body shop in Old Town Newhall. It spread to adjacent buildings, affecting seven structures in total. The incident caused approximately $13 million in damage. A boutique, a gastropub, and a theater were destroyed in the Santa Clarita community.

The Sheriff's Department confirmed the suspects have been released without charges pending further review. The department stated it works closely with the district attorney throughout the process. Officials said they respect the office's role in reviewing cases for filing consideration.

The department remains committed to a thorough investigation. It aims to work toward accountability for the victims and businesses impacted by the fire. The next step involves the Sheriff's Department returning to the field to clarify missing details.
