San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is actively pursuing his return to professional football after a lengthy period of uncertainty. According to reports from ESPN, Aiyuk recently hired agent Drew Rosenhaus to manage his affairs. Following this move, he has reportedly submitted the necessary paperwork to be reinstated on an active roster. NFL insider Adam Schefter indicated that Aiyuk is expected to report to the 49ers' facilities on Friday to complete the process.
Rosenhaus expressed confidence in his client's physical condition, stating that Aiyuk is healthy and prepared to get back on the field. If the reinstatement is approved, the 49ers will have the option to trade the receiver to another team or release him. General Manager John Lynch previously suggested that the wide receiver had likely played his final snap for San Francisco, a sentiment shared about ten months ago. The franchise is seeking compensation for parting ways with Aiyuk, a situation that has become a significant point of contention. However, it remains unclear if any other team will offer a package for his services. ESPN noted that release is the most probable outcome should the reinstatement go through.
The origins of this complicated situation trace back to October 2024, when Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list before the 2025 season to allow for continued rehabilitation. Despite this, reports emerged in December that the 49ers had placed him on the reserve list, citing a lack of communication and failure to meet certain contractual obligations regarding check-ins. Aiyuk had been focused on his personal rehab schedule, which led to the administrative dispute.
During the offseason, Aiyuk publicly criticized the 49ers on social media. He appeared to aim for a reunion with former college quarterback Jayden Daniels, signaling interest in joining the Washington Commanders. However, because the 49ers retained his contract rights, Aiyuk was required to file for reinstatement before any trade could occur. He had refused to take these steps during the break but has now proceeded with the formalities, effectively playing by the league's rules.
Aiyuk established himself as one of the NFL's elite receivers during the 2023 campaign. He finished that season with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, helping lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl LVIII title game. His efficiency metrics were among the best in the league, with a yards per route run figure that ranked third behind Tyreek Hill and Nico Collins. Additionally, his percentage of receptions that resulted in a first down or touchdown led the entire NFL.
Following the Super Bowl appearance, Aiyuk engaged in a hold-in during training camp, a strategy that ultimately secured a four-year contract extension worth $120 million. In the 2024 season, he played in just seven games before the injury ended his year. During those appearances, he reached the 50-yard receiving mark in only one contest. As he now prepares to report to the team, the outcome of his reinstatement will determine his next chapter in the league.
